The Pleurants

Two new pleurants, figures of mourning, emerged in the relative isolation of the early Covid pandemic, and seem apt for an era of disease, strife, and — for so many — inadequate housing.

Pleurant #1’s huddled posture and layered garments form a sight unfortunately too common.

A bronze sculpture of an anonymous figure huddling forward, the right leg bent and externally rotated, the left leg bent with knee upright with both arms wrapped about it. The figure is draped with what appears to be wearing a hooded sweatshirt and is draped with a ragged blanket.
Pleurant #1, 2023, bronze, 7 x 12 x 7 inches.

Pleurant #2’s more upright posture is no less stricken. Both figures depict losses of unknown nature, for mourning is universal.
